The One & Only space on Monroe Street, formerly Brasserie V, now has a new owner, Annemarie Maitri of Bloom Bake Shop and Lallande.

Bloom Bake Shop is set to expand again. Owner Annemarie Maitri bought the building at 1923 Monroe St., most recently One & Only, and has plans for a new restaurant.

Bloom has outgrown its space at 1851 Monroe St., but Maitri was intent on staying in the Monroe Street area, she tells Isthmus. “This is my neighborhood,” says Maitri, whose devotion to the area is clear and may stem in part, she thinks, from her childhood moving around as part of a military family.

Bloom was originally a cafe as well as a bakery counter at 1851, but its baking operations took over the cafe space during the pandemic. Once on-site dining came back, the bakery still needed that space to bake. Maitri expanded into the space next door at 1859 Monroe St., initially intending to re-create the Bloom cafe, but ultimately opening the dinner-only Lallande in 2023 with head baker, business partner and husband, Mark Pavlovich.

Now, Maitri is realizing a dream by owning her own building. She’s long wanted to purchase the 1851 space, but the landlord is not interested in selling. Maitri knew that something needed to change. “We were just out of room at the bakery. It’s congested for the customer as well as our baking team. The last couple years we've had to rent refrigeration for the holidays and park it out back. I knew that we needed to come up with some kind of solution but I didn't want to move.”

Maitri met with one of the owners of One & Only over coffee and it turned out they were interested in selling. “I did want to own something and have that level of security” in this time of rising rents.

One & Only opened in 2023 in what had been Brasserie V, a Belgian beer bar/gastropub that closed in part due to the labor shortage following the COVID pandemic. One & Only closed in May.

Bloom, known for a variety of baked goods as well as its vegan and gluten-free options, first opened in Middleton in 2010 and on Monroe Street in 2017. The Middleton location closed in 2018.

Bloom also opened a satellite location at Northstreet in 2022.

“We don't plan on leaving any of our current spaces,” says Maitri.

Maitri says they will use part of the new space for production, “which will give us some breathing room to rethink 1851, our current space, and get a game plan for getting that reorganized.”

The new space doesn’t need much remodeling — the bar is beautiful and One & Only recently added windows that open to the street — but Maitri will be updating the kitchen and bathrooms and putting the Bloom stamp on it in little ways. “I have a pretty clear vision,” she says, but does not want to divulge too much yet.

She hopes that the bakery production space there will be open by December “because we sure need it.” She’s shooting for the new concept, whatever it is, to be open by spring.

“I care so much about Monroe Street, I want to add another interesting [element] — so it will have a new name. I don't want the whole corridor to be Bloom. It'll be another interesting concept that still has the essence of Bloom. Same values, same sourcing values.”

Expansion gives her team another chance to grow, too, says Maitri. She has credited her long-time employees for getting the bakery through COVID. “I have people that have been with me anywhere from 5 to 11 years. I want to keep giving them opportunities to grow in ways that they want to.”

Maitri says that after years of worrying about her businesses, she’s become better able to enjoy them. “I love the creative side, even just thinking about what the space is going to feel like when you walk in, and the menu. I enjoy this process so much.”

The City of Madison has invited four finalists to propose designs for the public art planned for the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park, and members of the community have a chance to meet them next week.

The finalists were chosen by the Madison Arts Commission following extensive review by its Public Art Subcommittee, with significant input from Madison Parks and Madison Public Library. The four finalists who will move forward to the design phase are:

The selection process prioritized artists whose work would reflect the Reindahl Park area’s tremendous history and highlight a wide range of people from different cultural backgrounds. A 2020 Imagination Center at Reindahl Park Scoping Study found that while the area has significant diversity and history, residents noted it tends to lack identity overall.

The finalists were selected following an open call for artists that received 32 submissions from individuals, companies, and teams from around the world. The four finalists will now develop design proposals that reflect the area's identity, diversity, and values while creating an iconic piece that integrates with the new library, parks pavilion, and the surrounding Reindahl Park.

The finalists' design proposals are due on January 14, 2026. A community survey will begin after designs are submitted.

Meet and Greet

The community is invited to meet the artist finalists and hear brief presentations about their art practices at a public meeting.

The Imagination Center at Reindahl Park is a joint project between the Madison Public Library, Madison Parks, City of Madison Engineering, and the Madison Public Library Foundation. The facility will be home to Madison Public Library's first new library in 25 years as well as a year-round reservable park pavilion. The Imagination Center at Reindahl Park will provide crucial access to library services, technology, and community programming in an underserved area of the city, as well as add a four-season park pavilion to the City’s northeast side for family and community gatherings of all types. Construction began in spring 2025 with Corporate Contractors Inc. serving as the general contractor. The building is set to open in September 2026.

The Madison Arts Commission works to encourage artistic activities and performances throughout the city, supporting both emerging and established artists while enhancing the cultural landscape of Madison through public art initiatives.

Fire and medical crews were dispatched promptly following reports of the crash, which impacted eastbound traffic and led to temporary lane slowdowns. The incident is currently under review by local law enforcement agencies, who are working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

As of this morning, no additional updates have been released. Traffic on I-90 eastbound has since resumed normal flow.

(While you're in town, why not stop at one or two of Gays Mills’ six picturesque apple orchards and pick a bushel for yourself?) West Allis (1.25-hour drive)

The very same park where the Wisconsin State Fair is held each summer also hosts the Harvest Fair annually at the end of September. The fair also hosts more than 40 food vendors peddling classics like funnel cake and corn dogs, along with some seasonal items — among them, pumpkin spice and apple crisp-flavored cream puffs. Milwaukee (1.5-hour drive)

They don’t call Milwaukee “brew city” for nothing. It’s home to one of the largest German-American populations in the U.S. — and the city’s annual Oktoberfest, which pays tribute to the world-famous Munich festival of the same name, does not disappoint. Held on Milwaukee’s Summerfest grounds, Oktoberfest will have live music, a brat-eating contest and German fare provided by 100-year Milwaukee staple, Kegel’s Inn. Nekoosa (2-hour drive)

Cedarburg (1.75-hour drive)

For an Oktoberfest celebration with a small-town feel, head to the Milwaukee suburb of Cedarburg. Highlights at the festival this year include Foxtown Brewing’s bier garten, live bands and lighthearted contests like best braids and best lederhosen. Come hungry and try your luck in the pretzel-eating competition. When you’ve eaten your fill, do some shopping in Cedarburg’s historic downtown. Mount Horeb (25-minute drive)

Get a head start on holiday shopping at Mount Horeb’s Fall Village Market, which welcomes more than 75 vendors of handmade crafts and upcycled goods to the town’s main street. Make it a high-spirited shopping spree: During the event, local restaurants offer to-go cocktails so attendees can sip while they shop, and new to this year's market is the pop-up Thirsty Troll Beer Garden. Baraboo (50-minute drive)
