The City of Jacksonville, the Beaches and surrounding counties are hosting events on Tuesday to salute our military veterans.
Jacksonville's annual Veterans Day Parade returns on Nov. 11, honoring and celebrating all of the nation's heroes. The city says more than 2,500 people participate each year, including senior military officials, active-duty and retired military units, veteran groups, and local student groups, making it the biggest observance of its kind in Florida.
The public is encouraged to put on their red, white and blue to come cheer on the parade from the sidelines. The route is approximately 1.11 miles long and will last around two hours.
It begins in Downtown Jacksonville at 11:01 a.m., starting in front of the Jacksonville Center of the Performing Arts on Water Street. The route will continue with a left turn onto Hogan Street, then eastward on Bay Street until Lot X.
The First Coast News weather team says to be prepared for wind chills in the low 40s. Make sure to bring a coat. The event is rain-or-shine.
Traffic-wise, there will be road closures in the area throughout the morning and afternoon to accommodate the floats, performers, and crowds.
The following roads will be fully closed:
7:30 a.m. closures
10 a.m. closures
Other streets will see rolling closures or other traffic control measures. All roads will reopen by 2 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As flight delays and cancellations continue piling up nationwide after the Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce traffic, travelers are feeling the ripple effects, including at the Jacksonville International Airport.As of early Monday, airlines had already canceled nearly 1,600 flights and nearly 1,000 for Tuesday nationwide. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As flight delays and cancellations continue piling up nationwide after the Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce traffic, travelers are feeling the ripple effects, including at the Jacksonville International Airport.
As of early Monday, airlines had already canceled nearly 1,600 flights and nearly 1,000 for Tuesday nationwide. According to FlightAware, as of 6 a.m., eight flights have been canceled at JAX.
Many airports are facing significant delays for flights that haven’t been canceled as well, with airports in Newark, Orlando, Chicago and Detroit all facing departure delays of more than an hour and increasing, according to FlightAware.
News4JAX went to the airport on Monday morning to speak with travelers and ask them about their experience.
Some travelers had no complaints and said their experience had been smooth sailing, while others said they traveled for hours to get to this airport because of the cancellations that happened at the original airport they were traveling from.
Roni La Hartl told News4JAX she had to drive four hours to get to JAX because her flight was canceled in Tampa.
“We were already at the airport, so we had to find a flight. This is the only flight where I can go home today. And I’m supposed to work today,” she said.
The Senate took a first step toward ending the shutdown Sunday, but final passage could still be several days away, and experts have said it will take time for flights to go back to normal even after the government reopens.
This is the second pay period that air traffic controllers have not received any pay for their work. The head of the air traffic controllers union, Nick Daniels, will hold a press conference Monday morning to address the impact the shutdown is having on them.
The delays and cancellations are likely to get worse as airlines are increasingly unable to reposition planes, pilots and flight attendants due to the air traffic controller shortage.
The FAA implemented a 4% mandatory reduction in flights this weekend to manage staffing. That will increase to 6% on Tuesday and 10% reduction by this upcoming weekend. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on “Fox News Sunday” that additional flight cuts of up to 20% might be needed.
“More controllers aren’t coming to work day by day, the further they go without a paycheck,” Duffy said.
The government has been short of air traffic controllers for years, and multiple presidential administrations have tried to persuade retirement-age controllers to remain on the job. Duffy said the shutdown has exacerbated the problem, leading some air traffic controllers to speed up their retirements.
While 4% may sound modest, much of that reduction is happening at 40 of the nation’s busiest and most congested airports. The FAA says the flight reduction is necessary to keep travelers safe as many of the remaining controllers have been putting in long hours and mandatory overtime while the government remains unfunded.
If not addressed soon, the situation could get even worse as the U.S. heads into the busy holiday travel season. Duffy said that air travel may “be reduced to a trickle” by the week of Thanksgiving.

Fog drapes over stretches of I-10 and U.S. 301, thick enough in spots to slow early traffic near river crossings and low-lying marshes. The stillness won’t last long — by late Monday, a strong front will sweep through, bringing a clear sky and the coldest air of the season.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, dense fog will linger through midmorning before sunshine returns and temperatures surge into the mid-80s. A few brief showers or isolated thunderstorms could flare near the coast later today, followed by gusty winds and a dramatic cooldown. By Monday afternoon, winds will shift northwest at 15 to 25 mph as cooler, drier air spills in from Georgia and the Panhandle.
Temperatures will plummet Monday night into the low 30s inland and upper 30s along the St. Johns River basin. Patchy frost may form early Tuesday, particularly west of I-95 near Lake City, Baldwin, and Starke. JACKSONVILLE, FL – The city wakes under a gray veil this early Friday as thick fog rolls across the St. Johns River. Streetlights blur, headlights glow dull through the mist, and visibility dips to just a few hundred feet in spots from Baldwin to Amelia Island. It’s a quiet but potentially hazardous start across northeast Florida.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, dense fog is developing across inland and coastal counties, including Nassau, Duval, Clay, and St. Johns, with visibility occasionally dropping below one-quarter mile. Drivers on I-10, I-95, and U.S. 301 should allow extra time for reduced visibility and slow-moving traffic through the early morning hours. The fog is expected to lift gradually by mid-morning as sunshine breaks through.
Once the haze clears, much warmer air will surge in. Highs will climb into the lower 80s today and continue through the weekend, offering a stretch of near-summer warmth before the next change Sunday. Light winds today turn southwesterly Saturday, pushing inland temperatures to the mid-80s. A weak front will approach late Sunday, bringing a 20% chance of showers or isolated thunderstorms, mainly west of Jacksonville. Any rainfall will be brief, but gusty winds could accompany stronger cells along I-75 and the Suwannee Valley.
By early next week, drier and cooler air moves in behind the front. Monday and Veterans Day look breezy and bright with highs in the 60s. Longer-range trends suggest another warm-to-cool shift mid-November — a pattern that could hint at Florida’s first early winter cooldown before Thanksgiving.
