Temperatures plunging to the 20s will bring Alabama’s first widespread killing freeze of the season through Tuesday morning, but the weather will warm quickly later this week. Check the video forecast for the latest.

FREEZING COLD

The WVTM 13 First Warning Weather Team assigned Tuesday as a First Warning Impact Day because of record-setting cold and a hard freeze.

Birmingham and Tuscaloosa both set new records for the lowest maximum temperature on Monday, Nov. 10. Birmingham's high was only 42 degrees, and Monday was the coldest Nov. 10 in 130 years of record keeping. Tuscaloosa did manage to get to 44 degrees, but that still smashed 1977's record of 51 degrees.

The coldest temperatures of this arctic blast will occur early Tuesday morning, and some of the usual cold spots could briefly dip below 20 degrees.

Most of us will be somewhere between 20 and 25 by sunrise on Veterans Day, and that will mean some new record low temperatures for Nov. 11:

The National Weather Service in Birmingham defines a hard freeze in central Alabama as temperatures of 15 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. However, when it drops below 25 degrees, that’s a damaging, "killing" hard freeze. I’m not forecasting the definition; I’m telling you the condition to expect — a hard, damaging freeze.

Exposed, uninsulated pipes could freeze overnight. Well-insulated homes and buildings probably won’t have issues. These freezes usually impact pipes that run to sheds, barns and other outbuildings.

Any tender plant not covered or brought indoors will freeze tonight. The growing and mowing season will be over.

But fear not: There will still be plenty of leaves blowing around to keep you busy in the yard after this freeze.

WARMER DAYS AHEAD

Veterans Day will start with a record-setting cold morning, but the weather will be tolerable in the afternoon. Temperatures will warm into the upper 40s and lower 50s with a light southwest breeze and a sunny sky.

Birmingham's weather will be nearly perfect for the nation's oldest Veterans Day Parade in downtown starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The bitterly cold arctic air that will set record lows on Tuesday morning will move out by Wednesday, and the old weather saying "a wind from the west warms us best" will apply to the forecast for the rest of the week.

Afternoon high temperatures rebound to the 60s on Wednesday and then into the 70s by Thursday, Friday and the weekend.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK

Alabama's weather will be wildly different by the weekend. Monday's high was 25 degrees below average.

Highs on Saturday and Sunday will be about 10 degrees above average as we warm back to the middle 70s. The mornings will not be too cold, either. Expect lows mainly in the 40s and 50s on those weekend mornings.

Rain will be possible on Sunday with a weak disturbance bringing some clouds and showers, but we will not have any heavy rain or storms this weekend or early next week.

The longer-range idea will bring in some wet and potentially stormy weather in the next 10 days, though. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) heavy rain outlook marks a slight to moderate threat of heavy rainfall in Alabama around Nov. 19 and 20.

Following that, we will likely be back in the colder pattern again heading into Thanksgiving.

Veterans Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11. The federal holiday is a time to honor all those who served in the U.S. military.

The date itself is significant and traces its roots back to the end of World War I. Unlike several federal holidays that change dates each year, Veterans Day is commemorated on Nov. 11, no matter which day it falls.

The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham in 1947, according to the Veterans Administration. World War II veteran Raymond Weeks organized “National Veterans Day,” with a parade and other events to honor all veterans. The events were held on Nov. 11, which, at the time, was still referred to as Armistice Day.

Later, U.S. Rep. Edward Rees of Kansas proposed a bill to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Congress passed the measure in 1954 and it was signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, officially changing the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. The word “veterans” is plural to reflect the holiday honors all those who served.

Today, veterans and military are honored with parades, commemorative services and offers and discounts at popular restaurants. Military ID or proof of service is required in most cases.

Applebee’s is offering free full-sized offerings for active-duty, veterans, Reserves and National Guard members. Seven entree choices are available - 6-ounce top sirloin, classic bacon cheeseburger, chicken tenders platter, double crunch shrimp, Fiesta Lime Chicken, oriental chicken salad and three-cheese chicken penne.

Veterans and active-duty service members can get a free all-American burger with cheese and s side from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Veterans Day.

Blaze Pizza is offering a free one-topping pizza to veterans on Nov. 11. Also, Blaze Pizza will donate $1 from every pizza sold that day to Folds of Honor, helping fund educational opportunities for military families.

Veterans and active military can get a free small sub with purchase on Veterans Day.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen is giving veterans and active-duty military members a free appetize or dessert.

Birmingham council members would gain more power over the city’s spending priorities under a proposed bill from a state legislator and former mayoral candidate.

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan has prefilled a bill for the next legislative session in January to give the city council more authority over the city’s budget.

The bill would reverse a move made nearly a decade ago that took those powers from the council and gave them to the mayor.

Another proposed change would give the city council approval authority over department heads that are named by the mayor.

“In order for Birmingham city to function on a better level you have to have a balance of power,” Givan told AL.com. “Most importantly, you cannot have a system of government where the council does not have input into the budget. There must be a balance of power.”

Givan’s proposed edits to the Mayor-Council Act would allow the council to make line edits to the city’s proposed spending plan without written permission from the mayor.

Currently the council can’t make changes unless they get written approval from the mayor. Mayor Randall Woodfin’s budget must be voted on, up or down, and any changes require his permission.

The power shift occurred during the administration of former Mayor William Bell. The bill was championed by disgraced former state Rep Oliver Robinson, who left office after being convicted of federal corruption.

Givan at the time supported the changes in a sometimes raucous political era where the council and mayor would battle over city spending and other matters. But times have changed, she said.

Former Mayor Bell frequently clashed with council members, particularly during budget season. The city’s budget process for years had mirrored the federal level where the president proposes a budget with priorities, followed by a series of hearings, debates, and often raucous rhetoric from both sides.

“If I make an error I go back and correct it,” said Givan. “The rationale was there were modifications that needed to be made. I said it all summer, I have reversed course on it.”

Woodfin inherited the increased budget powers once he defeated Bell and took office in 2017.

Givan, who unsuccessfully challenged Woodfin for mayor this summer, insisted that her proposal was about providing balance in government and has nothing to do with the recent mayoral campaign.

“It is a restoration of power,” she said. “It’s not about anything else.”

Council members did not respond to a request for comment through their office Friday. Mayor Randall’s office also declined to comment on Givan’s proposed bill.

Budget hearings of the past were often dramatic showdowns that drew a full crowd of residents, neighborhood leaders, activists and advocates, who waited in line to plead for funding.

Eventually, the mayor and council reached a compromise to fund the city for the year, but only after heated debate and many rounds of edits.

“This has been the number one request that has been made every year by the council,” Givan said. “It’s just the right thing to do.”

The Kelly Ingram Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 668 and American Legion Post 255, Fultondale are collaborating to host a Veterans Day celebration.

The community event will be held on Veterans Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1801 11^th Avenue North in Birmingham. It is free and open to the public.

Organizers say the event will feature free food like BBQ pulled pork, chicken sandwiches, chili and baked beans. Music for veterans, families and friends will also be featured.

The Birmingham Zoo will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Veterans Day.

All veterans, active military and retired military, as well as up to five dependents will receive free admission to the zoo with proof of a valid military ID.

Dine-in and drive-thru options

Veterans, active-duty and retired military personnel that dine-in at Another Broken Egg Cafe on Tuesday, Nov. 11 can receive a complimentary Patriot French Toast topped with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream, as well as a Barista House Blend coffee.

Applebee’s is honoring all veterans and active-duty military this Veterans Day with a free meal. It is only offered through dine-in, guests must show a valid military ID or proof of U.S. Military service and meals can only be ordered from a special menu with seven of Applebee’s most popular menu items.

The meal is only valid on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Applebee’s is also hosting a “Buy a Vet a Beer” promotion where guests can purchase a pre-paid pint for a veteran, accompanied by a special message from the buyer. This promotion is running now through Nov. 11. Any beers that go unclaimed will have the funds donated to a local veterans’ charity.

Chicken Salad Chick is offering all veteran and active military a free meal with one side and a drink on Veterans Day.

Scooter’s Coffee is offering a free medium drink to veterans on Veterans Day.

Guests ordering must have a valid military ID. There is a one order limit per customer, and the offer is not available for mobile orders.

Starbucks is offering free coffee to veterans, military service members and their family members.

Qualifying customers can receive one free tall, brewed coffee, iced or hot. Participating US Starbucks stores will honor the discount both on in store and drive through order with a limit of one coffee per customer per visit.

Home values all across Alabama have dropped slightly in 2025, and the Birmingham area is no different.

Nearly every county and most cities in the area have seen declines in home prices, and the metro as a whole is down through the first nine months of the year.

But the Birmingham area didn’t fare as poorly as the state as a whole. And some Birmingham-area cities actually saw big price increases through September, according to data from real estate company Zillow.

And even as home values have dropped slightly, they’re still well above where they were 10 years ago in most places. Home values surged in the years directly following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Birmingham metro area saw a decline of about $730 in typical single-family home values from January to September of this year, according to Zillow. That’s a little less than the state as a whole, which saw home values drop by nearly $1,000.

Five of the six counties in the metro saw typical values drop. Only Shelby County, an affluent county just south of Birmingham, saw prices go up.

Shelby County is the second most expensive county in Alabama in terms of home prices, according to Zillow. Values there have increased by about $1,000 in 2025.

Houses in Jefferson County, home to Birmingham and the most populous county in the state, saw a downtick in value of about $1,300.

Many of the swings in the metro area — and the state as a whole — were relatively minor. But some were more significant. Bibb County, a less-populated county in the southern part of the region, saw a decline of more than $8,000, the biggest drop of any county in the metro.

Looking at individual cities within the metro area shows a finer picture of the region’s shifting housing market. Roughly 67% of the 86 Birmingham-area cities with real estate data from Zillow showed declines in home values in 2025.

That includes Birmingham proper, which saw a nearly $3,700 drop in values.

But many of Birmingham’s major suburbs actually saw home values increase. None saw a bigger jump than Mountain Brook, which was already the most expensive city in Alabama to buy a home, per Zillow. Home values there — already over $1 million — increased by about $24,000. That was the biggest increase for any city in Alabama. No other city came close to Mountain Brook’s typical home price tag.

Homewood, which neighbors both Birmingham and Mountain Brook, also saw a big gain in value. The typical home increased in value by about $11,000, one of only four cities in Alabama to see at least a $10,000 rise. Vestavia Hills, another affluent suburb south of Birmingham, saw home values increase by nearly $8,000.

But those wealthy areas south of town weren’t the only ones to see gains. Cities just north of Birmingham, including Fultondale, Gardendale and Trussville, also saw home values rise.

Within Birmingham, the story was similar. Nearly 61% of the 89 neighborhoods recognized by Zillow showed losses in typical home value.

Norwood, a neighborhood just north of downtown, saw the biggest rise in home values, an increase of about $10,500. No other neighborhood topped $10,000.

Three neighborhoods — Redmont Park, East Birmingham and Druid Hills — saw $10,000 price drops. Redmont park is by far the most expensive neighborhood in the city, with home values nearing $900,000.

Zillow’s typical home value estimates are based on the Zillow Home Value Index. AL.com analysed a subset of this data that looked at estimates for single family homes within the 35th and 65th percentile of homes within a given area.
